Commissioning Public Art in the UAE: What to Include in Your Brief

Start with the purpose of the place

A strong public art brief starts with what the work should contribute. Is the aim to express local identity, introduce an artist’s perspective, invite participation or connect a group of sites? Explain who uses the place and what matters to them. An artwork can respond to a building, a street, a park or an everyday journey. The setting should inform the commission before a medium or artist is selected.

Give artists a clear framework

Include the location, available surfaces or spaces, intended lifespan, budget range and programme. Identify the people who will review concepts and make decisions. Share useful site photographs and any known constraints. A brief should create room for artistic interpretation while making practical expectations clear. For a mural, surface condition and access affect the delivery plan. For a sculpture or installation, the relationship to the site and the involvement of technical specialists need early discussion.

Plan for delivery and care

Agree how concepts become approved designs, who coordinates site access and how the finished work will be documented. Include maintenance and handover from the beginning. Public art commissioning involves artists, clients, communities and delivery specialists; the brief should make their responsibilities understandable. DezArt supports this process through public art strategy, artist commissioning, design development, production and site delivery in Abu Dhabi and across the UAE.
